Principality of Monaco: 9th February 2013

FROM SAN REMO (ITALY) TO MONACO (MONTE-CARLO)

9th February (Saturday)

I made the most of my stay in San Remo to visit Monaco. The distance from San Remo to Monte-Carlo is just 44.5 kilometres! My Russian flatmate (a woman who was living in the flat since one day before than me) wanted to go with me and we went to buy the train tickets. The first train stopped in Ventimiglia in only 13 minutes. And the other one, from Ventimgilia to Monte-Carlo took less between 20-25 minutes. A short trip that it's worth :-) We spent all the day there and we noted promptly that Monaco was really expensive!

Saturday morning still in San Remo

Monaco-Monte-Carlo is the only railway station in the Principality of Monaco. It's served by trains of the French operator SNCF, on the Marseille–Ventimiglia railway line. The station, along with the entire railway line in the principality, is underground

In Monte-Carlo is normal to see luxury cars in the streets.
This is a beautiful Ferrari parked on 3 Avenue Prince Pierre

Monaco is probably the place on earth with the highest concentration of Ferrari by square meter...and not only during the F1 Grand Prix.

If you want to observe them, the best spot is the Casino Place: red, black, yellow... they're everywhere ! Tourists favourite activity is to take a picture pretending that this is their car

Between Rue Grimaldi (Grimaldi Street) and Rue de la Turbie (Turbie Street). The Condamine includes Grimaldi Street, the Place d'Armes and the little church of Sainte-Devote, the Boulevard Albert I and the Port Hercule

La Condamine is the second oldest district in Monaco, after Monaco-Ville. It's known for its distinctive wide harbor and moored expensive yachts.

Gare ferroviaire: Train station

Moneghetti: Moneghetti is a north central residential district and tourist area; part of the traditional Quartier of La Condamine in the Principality of Monaco.[1] However, some observe Moneghetti as an effective fifth Quartier of the Monaco, having a very distinct atmosphere and topography when compared with low-lying La Condamine.

Jardin Exotique: The Jardin Exotique de Monaco (French for "exotic garden of Monaco") is a botanical garden located on a cliffside in Monaco. It was opened in 1933, and has a rich collection of over a thousand species of succulent plants, especially cactuses.

The quality was not very good but the price was very expensive! It's Monaco!

Fontvieille Shopping Centre: Elevator from above street of Monaco down to passage leading to interior. Les Terrasses de Fontvieille: Antique Car Museum

The Fontvieille Shopping Centre is a luxury shopping centre in the heart of Monaco. It combines practicality and completeness with elegance. Indeed with its large car park and 36 shops including hi-fi equipment, music, furniture and clothes together with various restaurants, a Carrefour hypermarket and a McDonalds, you will find everything you need on a daily basis. There was also a Decathlon store where I bought sport clothing and good pair of cross trainers. There were good sales but I spent a lot of money!!!

The most important tourist places in Monaco

La Condamine commerces: Located just South of Place du Casino, La Condamine is a favorite area of the city, particularly for tourists. The harbor has its natural appeal, and Port de Monaco has no shortage of shops to snare the budding shop-a-holic too.

Visitors can expect to find an eclectic mix of everything from high fashion to wonderful oranges and flowers at the local markets. This is definitely Monte Carlo’s most diversified shopping experience.

Between the unbelievable luxury of the yachts in the harbor, to the fishermen at the markets, this hodge podge of Mediterranean flavor is an experience to remember.

La Poste Monaco: La Poste de Monaco is the company responsible for postal service in Monaco.
Fontvieille: Fontvieille is the newest of the four traditional quarters (districts) in the principality of Monaco, and one of ten Wards for modern administrative purposes. Located in the western part of Monaco its construction was started in the 1970s following the project of the Italian architect Manfredi Nicoletti. New plans exist to extend Fontvieille, due to Monaco's growing economy and population.
Stade Louis II: The Stade Louis II is a stadium located in the Fontvieille district of Monaco. It serves primarily as a venue for football, being the home of AS Monaco and the Monaco national football team. From 1998-2012 this was the location of the annual UEFA Super Cup match. It 's also used for track and field, where it formerly hosted the IAAF World Athletics Final (though certain events, such as the hammer, had to be held elsewhere, due to the stadium's relatively small capacity).
Le Rocher: The Rocher de Monaco (The Rock) is the heart of old Monaco and the home of the ruling Grimaldi family. Towering over the city and the port, the Rock is reached either via elevator or by walking up a series of ramps and stairs. The views along the way are stunning and provide opportunities for frequent breaks in the climb!

Musée Océanographique: At the far end of the Rock, overlooking the Mediterranean, is the grand Musée Océanographique. It was founded by Prince Albert I, who was a serious researcher and oceanographer. It includes an extensive aquarium and a large collection of skeletons of marine mammals.
The Musée Océanographique borders the beautiful Jardins Saint-Martin. These beautiful gardens slope down to the sea and include numerous plantings of trees, flowers, and shrubs, with blooms year round.

Palais Princier: The Prince's Palace of Monaco is the official residence of the Prince of Monaco. Built in 1191 as a Genoese fortress, during its long and often dramatic history it has been bombarded and besieged by many foreign powers.

Via Alpina: The Via Alpina is a network of five long-distance hiking trails across the alpine regions of Slovenia, Austria, Germany, Liechtenstein, Switzerland, Italy, France, and Monaco.

Le Marché de la Condamine (The Condamine Market) on 15 place d'Armes. Close to the shopping area of the Condamine and Port Hercule, the market is open daily. The interior of the hall includes stalls fishmonger, butchers, bakers, butchers and caterers offering local products as well as Monaco and regional specialties. Outside, there are fruit and vegetable growers and florists. The hall was completely renovated in 2012 and now welcomes new merchants to offer revitalized and more than ever focused on usability and quality.
In addition to its market, Place d'Armes offers pleasant terraces, a newspaper stand, a souvenir kiosk and a children's playground

Grimaldi Palace
Prince’s Palace of Monaco, Palais Princier, is the official residence of the Prince of Monaco, located on The Rock of Monaco. Its history goes back to the 12 century when it was built as a Genoese fortress. Since the 13 century the Grimaldi family has been ruling and living in the palace.

The palace is a mix of different architectural styles. During the centuries the various occupants of the fortress renovated and added wings, towers and state apartments. The façade is in Renaissance style, while the rear of the palace still has original medieval fortifications

Allez Monaco!!! I have sympathy for this club since 1999 when Farnerud was playing there... I remember when I went to A Coruña to watch the Champions football match Deportivo vs Monaco (Monaco won 0-5!) and P. Farnerud gave me his t-shirt and shorts after the game :-)

J'aime Monaco <3

Key-rings that I bought in Monaco

I enjoyed a lot my time in Monaco. Monaco is a special place, like a microcosm. Monaco is not formally a part of the European Union (EU), but it participates in certain EU policies, including customs and border controls. Through its relationship with France, Monaco uses the euro as its sole currency. Monaco is the second smallest country (by area) in the world (only Vatican City is smaller).

The wider defence of the nation is provided by France. Monaco has no navy or air force, but on both a per-capita and per-area basis, Monaco has one of the largest police forces (515 police officers for 35,000 people) and police presences in the world. Its police includes a specialist unit which operates patrol and surveillance boats.

There is also a small military force. This consists of a bodyguard unit for the Prince and the palace in Monaco-Ville called the Compagnie des Carabiniers du Prince (Prince's Company of Carabiniers), which is equipped with modern weapons such as M16A2 rifles and 9 mm pistols (Glock 17), and which together with the militarized, armed fire and civil defence Corps (Sapeurs-Pompiers) forms Monaco's total public forces.

Monaco boasts the world's highest GDP nominal per capita at US$153.177, GDP PPP per capita at $132.571 and GNI per capita at $183.150
It also has an unemployment rate of 2%  with over 48.000 workers who commute from France and Italy each day. According to the CIA World Factbook, Monaco has the world's lowest poverty rate and the highest number of millionaires and billionaires per capita in the world. For the fourth year in a row, Monaco in 2012 had the world's most expensive real estate market, at $58.000 per square metre!!! Everyone there is rich and lives in a world apart.

But apart from that, it's a place which is well worth visiting. Monaco has become one of interesting destination for tourists. A microstate that borders with France and Italy, with beautiful views, classy places, and the Grand Prix Formula 1.

Monaco claim has some real estate and the world's most precious landscape. As a visitor, you will enjoy a clean and safe area is. In addition, you can enjoy delicious food and be a part of social life there. However, don't forget to bring extra money, because almost all the places here put up a great price!!!
