Setubal has one of the few colonies of bottlenose dolphins in europe. Setúbal Bay, with all its cultural, environmental and patrimonial qualities and values, belonged to the Club of the Most Beautiful Bays of the World on November 14, 2002...

Passing through the landscape from the top of Arrábida Mountain or floating at the mercy of the tide in the Setubal marina, there is always an invite for great moments, the bay offers a multitude of experiences: the city and the mountains; the Sado estuary and the beaches of the Atlantic, historical monuments and gastronomic delicacies.

That is why this is a unique region in the world, full of charm and mysteries, that reveal themselves on bright and unforgettable days

Albarquel Urban Park is a nice small park between the city and Arrábida accessible from the city centre, right next to the sea. Good for relaxing a bit and enjoy the landscape with a view of Tróia in the other side of the river...

Praia de Albarquel is the closest beach to Setubal (1.5km from central Setubal)
and offers a wide strip of golden sand with beach bar and restaurant

The day is not complete without a drink looking at the Sado estuary. We stopped at the restaurant Rockalot Acqua Bay located in the Urban Park of Albarquel. Just follow the same road towards Setúbal and you will find it just after the exit to Albarquel beach. It has wonderful views from the deck and peaceful surroundings.  The tables are set on a balcony with a direct view of the sea allowing you to watch the sunset and, with a little luck, spot the dolphins that live in the estuary.

It immediately makes you feel good and relaxed... A perfect place to watch sunset and enjoy life! The chef has won Portuguese chef of the year twice

Photos taken from the terrace of the restaurant... In a calm and family atmosphere

More pics at the Albarquel Beach

The sea waters of the Setubal region are always cold, as they are fed by the Atlantic Ocean! Too cold for me cause I was born in the Mediterranean xD

Unfortunately due to the proximity of the Sado Estuary the water quality is not as good as the other beaches of Setubal but if topping up your tan is your idea then this beach is easily accessible and can be walked to in less 30 minutes...

Frozen xD

Praia de Albarquel has a unique rock feature to western edge of the beach

Inaugurated, in May of 2008, this space is the most recent green area of the city

The fishermen and their boats, the river and the sea
are inseparable from the identity of Setubal

The Diving Dolphins at Avenida Luisa Todi

Dolphins are an important symbol in Setubal. A local family are often seen playing and feeding in the Sado River and estuary, becoming one of the local tourist attractions. Local boat trips are often organized to take visitors out to see the dolphins, who are now honoured by this fountain and statue. The estuary is also an important nature reserve and breeding ground for various birds
