Cinema São Jorge, Av. da Liberdade nº175. The Sao Jorge (St. George) Cinema was built between 1947 and 1950. The architect was Fernando Silva who designed a lavish Art Deco style cinema seating 1,827 on orchestra and balcony levels, which at the time was the largest cinema on the Iberian peninsula. It was equipped with Lisbon’s only cinema organ; a Compton ‘Theatrone’ electronic organ (the 3 Manual console came from the bomb damaged Regal Cinema, Bexleyheath, England) and was opened by noted British organist Gerald Shaw
The Monumento aos Mortos da Grande Guerra (Monument to the Fallen of the Great War)
About halfway towards the Praça Marquês de Pombal, near Rua do Salitre, stands the Monumento aos Mortos da Grande Guerra (Monument to the Fallen of the Great War).
This large monument, inaugurated in 1931, honors the Portuguese soldiers who fought in the First World War. The monument was created by the local sculptor Maximiano Alves. It shows a soldier being crowned on top of a pedestal which is supported on two sides by muscular figures

The building (in the photo below) which houses the Headquarters of the Lisbon Metro, situated on Av. Fontes Pereira de Melo, was designed by the Architect Norte Júnior for a rich capitalist, called José Maria Moreira Marques, who had made his fortune in Brazil. This building, commonly known as the “wedding cake” because of its exuberant decoration, was awarded the Valmor Prize in 1914.
In 1950, the owner’s descendants sold the building to the Lisbon City Council and, in 1954, it was let to the Lisbon Metro which, by the end of that year, moved in its Headquarters. In 1999, the City Council granted to the Metropolitano de Lisboa the ownership of the building
Over the years, the building has been considered to be a remarkable “museum” for the decorative arts from the beginning of the century. Its exterior displays elements inspired by the classical, neo-classical and “art nouveau” styles, such as the doors, windows and verandas. This small palace has always been considered to be a building of important and unusual value
