In this square there is a monument dedicated to remembering
the combatants in the First World War between 1914 and 1918

Rua de Bocage

Praça do Bocage

All streets in the pedestrianised old town seem to lead to this mosaic-cobbled square, presided over by the arcaded pink-and-white town hall. Bocage Square is located in the Parish of St. Julian in Setúbal. It’s a sunny spot for a wander amid the palms and fountains, or for coffee and people-watching on one of the pavement terraces. The Bocage Square is a tribute to its most famous citizen, the satirical poet Manuel Maria Barbosa du Bocage (1765-1805). This is a central place in the city. On this location you'll find among restaurants, cafes, the city hall and all kind of points of historical interest

Bocage Square is one of the main arteries of the city of Setubal, in which it finds the statue of Bocage and the St. Julian church. This is statue is a monument dedicated to this well-known local poet. The city of Setubal, has throughout its history been birthplace or home of many famous people in Portugal and in the World, one of the key figures is the poet Bocage... This statue stands a 12m high Corinthian, white marble column on top

Bocage is considered by many the greatest Portuguese poet of the 18th century who was born in Setubal on 15 September 1765. Free-spirited, rebellious and contentious, Bocage came irremediably in conflict with the authorities which ended up with him being arrested in 1797. Many of Bocage's works of Bocage were only published after his death in Lisbon on December 21, 1805.

On the pedestal faces are inscribed the following words:

South - A M.M.BARBOSA DU BOCAGE/ ADMIRADORES SEUS/ PORTUGUESES E BRASILEIROS/MDCCCLXXI; DE ELMANO EIS SOBRE O MÁRMORE SAGRADO/ A LYRA EM QUE CHORAVA OU RIA AMORES.../SER D’ELLES, SER DAS MUSAS FOI SEU FADO!/ HONRAI-LHES A LYRA VATES E AMADORAS!/; East side - DOOU-ME PHEBO AOS SECULOS VONDOUROS;/ DEPONHO A FLOR DA VIDA E AGUARDO O FRUCTO;/ PAGANDO À VIL MATÉRIA O VIL TRIBUTO/ RETENHO A POSSE D’IMMORTAES THESOUROS./; North side - ASSIM COM QUEM SE UFANA A PEDRA ERGUIDA,/ AH! SE ENCANTOU COM SONORAS CORES.../ JÁ BOCAGE NÃO É! NÃO SOIS AMORES!.../ CHORAI-LHES A MORTE, CELEBRAI-LHES A VIDA!/; West side - UM NUME SÓ TERRÍVEL AOS TYRANNOS,/ NÃO HÁ TRISTE MORTAL, FRAGILIDADE;/ EIS O DEUS QUE CONSOLA A HUMANIDADE,/ EIS O DEUS DA RASÃO, O DEUS D’ELMANO.

The Igreja de São Julião (St. Julian's Church), an 18th-century church
located on the Praça de Bocage.  It's the main church of the city

This was originally built in the second half of the 13th century. The original church was almost completely destroyed by the Great Earthquake of 1755 and was greatly rebuilt and redecorated in the last third of the 18th century following the late Baroque style. From this stage date the general appearance of the façade, the inner wooden roof, the painted tiles, the main and lateral altarpieces and the main chapel

Inside the church

Avenida Luísa Todi. This avenue is one of the most important avenues in Setubal, here you'll find the “Casa da Baia”, the “Centro de Promoção Turistica”, the archaeology Museum, the “Mercado do Livramento, the “Galleria Municipal”, and the Municipal Forum of Luisa Todi” this nice avenue is divided in to 4 lanes divided by a nice park

Muse of Bocage. Sculpture in bronze by Charles Correia sculptor from Seville who donated this piece to the city in 1988. It's at the intersection of Av. Luísa Todi and Praça do Bocage representing an inspiring nymph of the great Sevillian poet Manuel Maria Barbosa du Bocage, also known as Elmano Sadino

Perhaps because of the sheer rudeness of some of his verse Bocage is still a genuinely popular figure today, and not only in Setubal. The subversiveness of his poems has meant that for much of the last 200 hundred years they have not been (officially) available in Portugal: the erotic poetry was first published anonymously towards the end of the 19th century, and his collected works were briefly made officially available during the First Republic; but the Salazar government placed his works on the index of forbidden books

Back of the Livramento Market (Mercado do Livramento) is one of the best fish markets around the world according to USA Today. A market not to be missed! It's a place you must visit if you go to Setubal, except on Mondays because is closed

Any time of the day, the market is busy and bustling with the locals as well as some tourists... Here you can see the local life, the atmosphere is an experience on its own... Sellers are always kind and helpful

The stands are beautiful and the products well presented
