THE VISIT TO CAMACHA

Camacha is a parish in the municipality of Santa Cruz. It's situated in the mountainous interior of the island, 3 km north of Caniço, 7 km northeast of Funchal and 6 km west of Santa Cruz

The emblematic Cafe Relogio, here is where they sell wicker crafts

Next to the "Café Relógio" is the Capela de São José - São José Chapel built in Camacha centre in 1924. It's currently in the charge of the Franciscan Sisters of Our Lady of Victories. The chapel has a beautiful high altar and is very well preserved. The São José Chapel is considered a Heritage of the Autonomous Region of Madeira

We visited, of course, The Café Relógio, famous for its tower that has a bell and a clock (relógio) from Liverpool. The Craft Factory and the Wickerwork Market are located there

Situated in the parish of Camacha, Café Relógio is a parish landmark. This quaint cafe opened in 1896 and was built by Dr. Michael Grabham in his Quinta da Camacha (Camacha Farm). The clock and bell tower of this famous cafe were brought from the Church of Walton, in Liverpool.

In addition to having an inn, this café also has a craft factory and wickerwork market where you can watch a live wickerwork making demonstration

The principal place of Camacha is The Café Relógio's Bazaar: the largest exhibition of handicrafts of famous "works of wicker" of Camacha. More than 1000 articles manufactured by craftsmen are exposed and can be purchased with all the convenience

The traditional Mexelote (or mexilote, mexilhote, mechelote): the stick of Poncha.
The word certainly derives from the verb 'mexer' (move, shake).

Estádio dos Barreiros being renovated

Estádio dos Barreiros or Estádio do Marítimo is a multi-purpose stadium in Funchal. It's currently used mostly for football matches. It's the home stadium of Club Sport Marítimo and although much larger in its hey-day, the stadium can now hold 8.922 people

Estádio dos Barreiros is located about 2.5 kilometres
west of the city centre of Funchal. Address: Rua Dr. Pita
