This is one of the oldest hotels in Madeira island in Estrada Monumental

My first Sunday in Funchal! We decided to go to Lido area. My 3 friends and their mother.

Promenade do Lido

The Promenade do Lido is a seaside walking trail that stretches from the Lido area all the way to Praia Formosa, which is also known as heart of Funchal´s hotel zone

Bordering the promenade is the ocean and many well known Maderian hotels

Enotel Lido Madeira, Rua Simplício dos Passos Gouveia 29

Direct access to the enchanting oceanfront Lido promenade

Restaurants, cafés, leisure areas such as parks and public swimming pools are easily accessed by the promenade

Since the opening of a new coastal promenade, the Lido area in Funchal, already well known for the many tourist facilities it offers, developed even more into an extensive leisure zone much appreciated by locals as well as tourists

Lined with palm trees and bordered by splendid botanical gardens, this promenade links the Lido area with the pebbled Praia Formosa beach at the western end of Funchal, offering breathtaking views over the sea and towards Cabo Girão to all those who stroll, walk or run along there …or who just relax on one of the many benches!

Taking a nice stroll along the Lido promenade and enjoying the picturesque scenery it offers us! This promenade is safe to walk in day and night. Madeira Island is considered the safest island in the world!

You can go for a swim in the sea or just sunbathe...  All along this promenade there are several opportunities to enjoy these activities. There are three public swimming pools – the Lido swimming pool complex with the largest seawater pool, the Clube Naval and the recently opened Ponta Gorda swimming pool complex – all of which offer extensive leisure facilities with seawater and separate children’s pools, sea access, sports activities, restaurants, snack bars, etc…all you need for spending a relaxing day at the sea front!

We are family! Living life is fun and we've just begun to get our share of the world's delights. We don't get depressed. Here's what we call our golden rule... xD

The magnificent replica of Christopher Columbus's Flag ship "The Santa Maria"

Nice panoramic views and the flags

Jardim Público do Lido. The Lido promenade's garden is a pleasant place where many events occur from craft fairs to canine shows. Funchal city has a lot of magnificent gardens and parks. Just wonderful

"Voluntariado" (Volunteering) made by the Madeiran sculptor Martim Velosa in 2002. It's a sculpture commemorating the International Year of Volunteers - 2001. Concrete wall with the silhouettes of three hands cut out

Jardim Panorâmico of Funchal, is a public garden located on the main tourist area of Monumental Street and promenade with lovely views over the sea

This pleasant garden has of variety of plants and flowers from all over the Island, adjoined by panels of ceramic tiles created by Rigo the plastic artist, which represents the panoramic views that can be appreciated from this place

Near Cais, Avenida do Mar e das Comunidades Madeirenses

Monument to the Madeiran Emigrant - Monumento ao Emigrante Madeirense by Franco Fernandes, a Portuguese sculptor. It's a bronze statue of a half kneeling man with a sphere in his hands. A tribute to the Madeiran emigrants who took the name and traditions of the island to all latitudes. Inaugurated 1 July 1982. The inscription says: Ao emigrante madeirense presente em todas as latitudes (To the Madeiran Emigrant present at all latitudes)

Avenida do Mar is the main avenue that crosses Funchal city

Largo dos Varadouros. In the 17th and 18th century this square represented the commercial centre as well as the main entrance gate of the town

Avenida do Mar. Here you can see a place where you can buy a bolo do caco and we did it! :-) My friends invited me to try this good cake but we ate it at home ^^

Catia buying the bolos! Bolo do caco is a bread that is circular like a cake and thus called bolo (cake in Portuguese). It is a flat circular bread, traditionally cooked on a Caco, a flat basalt stone slab. The bread is usually served simply with Garlic butter and is usually eaten as a sandwich with octopus, Espetada, Milho Frito and also used as the bread for the Prego Sandwich (Portuguese steak sandwich). It's typical in Madeira and I loved it! But it has too many calories!!!

Descriptions in several languages and prices

Travessa dos Varadouros

Praça de Colombo (Columbus Square). It's a very famous square in Funchal. Set among colonial style houses, it played a vital role in shaping Madeira's history

Largo do Chafariz. Bazar do Povo is an emblematic department store in the heart of downtown Funchal built in 1883. It has been virtually untouched over the years maintaining its original exterior.

If you’re a fan of bazaars inspired by the French department stores, you’ll find everything you’ve always dreamed perfumes, fabrics, gift ideas. This shopping center enchanted me and satisfied all my cravings. And the prices were quite cheap in comparison with other stores

Delicious Vanilla ice-creams at Dolce Vita shopping center

Miradouro do Pico dos Barcelos - Pico dos Barcelos viewpoint in São Martinho, Funchal

The Pico dos Barcelos Viewpoint is approximately 355 meters above sea level. From this point there is a splendid panoramic view over Funchal bay and the city area, with the Desertas Islands in the background. This viewingpoint was recently restructured and nowdays it includes additional green and commercial areas where local crafts and restaurants can be found and also new leisurement facilities. This area underwent substantial improvements in terms of pedestrian and automobile access

Great lookout point located north of Funchal

A fantastic scenery, here the visitors can appreciate Madeira’s beautiful valleys and mountains plus spectacular views of Funchal and the Atlantic Ocean

Yummy!!! Dinner at my friends' home. Que saudades!!! Muito obrigadinha por tudo
