Jardim do Almirante Reis

SANTA LUZIA

The civil parish of Santa Luzia is located in an area of 134 hectares (331 acres). It has about 7 thousand inhabitants and is characterised for being a residential area with schools and, of course, a church – the Church of Santa Luzia. The civil parish is not very big, and starts close to Funchal city centre and carries on until halfway up on the hillside of the island. Amongst the many houses it features, it has countless farms, which their owners have managed to preserve for a long time now. With their work, they have kept a little of the soul of the people that made the island grow, and bring it to our day and age.

In the afternoon we went to the public garden Jardim de Santa Luzia

Inaugurated on September 27th 2004, Santa Luzia
has a beautiful garden situated in the centre of Funchal

With an area of 17.000 m2, this was once the location of the Hinton factory
(the sugar Industry of Madeira); today only the old chimney remains

The Santa Luzia Garden features traces of the influence of the Madeiran sugar industry

This park was transformed into five beautiful gardens filled with green space, tropical plants and Laurissilva. Moreover, there is a children’s playground to entertain the younger one’s while parents savour a ‘garoto’ in the nearby café which attracts many locals and tourists alike

In this garden we can identify five different themed gardens: the Tropical Garden (Jardim Tropical), the Water Garden (Jardim da Água), the Terrace Garden (Jardim dos Socalcos), the Amphitheatre Garden (Jardim do Anfiteatro) and the Laurissilva "laurel forest" Garden (Jardim da Laurissilva)

Under the National Prize for Landscape Architecture it was awarded an honourable mention in the category of Outdoor Spaces for Public Use, designed by landscape architect Luís Paulo Ribeiro

This place used to be the Hilton factory, where liquor and sugar was produced. The old chimney which belonged to the Hilton factory has remained in the same place. This garden, which features contemporary landscape architecture, has preserved its old factory chimney and some machinery that recalls the influence of the sugar industry of Madeira :-)
